Two days ago the Tshwane Entertainment Collective released an open letter to the minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa to anull sponsorship for the Africa Unite Concert.
The headliners for this event include “Burna Boy”, a Nigerian artist who publicly divulged his intentions to physically assault “AKA” when they cross paths. This is following the xenophobic attacks in September this year. Note that he did not apologize for this.
The open letter suggests the unfairness of funding a concert owned by foreign companies in such a short period whereas the ‘Department of Sports, Arts and Culture’ still fails to fund local events and entrepreneurs affiliated with sports, arts and culture which often have to undergo lengthy processes which are sometimes not even be completed.
Some South African artists have declined the invitation to perform at this event because of this predicament. The argument hence is fair and at the moment the minister of Sports, Arts and Culture has been given 3 working days to release an official statement of their position on the matter.
